Cricket Tadka IPL 6 Predictions: Week 6 & 7

Before the predictions for the next week, here’s where the teams stand in the play off race at the end of week 5. Kolkata, Delhi and Pune are officially out of the play off contentions. Chennai is almost there with the top spot in the points table. Out of the rest 5, Kings XI Punjab has an outside chance of making into the top 4. So effectively, the competition is between 4 teams for 3 play off spots. Mumbai and Rajasthan are at no. 2 & 3 respectively with 16 points each from 12 games. RCB is placed fourth with 14 points in 12 matches whereas Hyderabad has 14 points in 11 matches and are placed at no. 5 on the basis of net run rate. Week 6 will be crucial for these teams as the competition gets closer from here.

Match No. 71, Pune Warriors vs Delhi Daredevils, Subroto Roy Sahara Stadium, Pune

In an inconsequential match, the two teams who are placed at the bottom of the points table will meet each other. The result of the match will decide which team will get the wooden spoon. Delhi’s team looks better than Pune in all departments and there’s no home advantage for Pune either. So, I will go with Delhi for the match. If Delhi wins the match, this will be second consecutive season for which Pune Warriors will finish last.

Match No. 72, Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad

This may be the last league match of IPL 6, but is very important to decide the play off line up. Hyderabad and Bangalore have same number of points. SO if Hyderabad wins this match, they will enter the play offs while RCB will be hopeful of Hyderabad’s loss. However, bad luck for RCB that the match ois at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad where the team SRH loves to play and they start as the favorite against the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Match No. 54, Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Chennai Super Kings, Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad

Chennai are at the top of the points table and have lost only one away game in IPL 6 so far. But their batting failure in the last match at Wankhede was a wake up call. They will be playing the bowling powerhouse Sunrisers at Hyderabad where the pitch assists the bowlers. 2 piece of facts must show why Hyderabad has more chances of winning this match. First, Highest score on Hyderabad pitch in IPl 6 so far is 130. That shows how much bowlers enjoy bowling on this pitch. And secondly, Hyderabad is undefeated so far at home in 5 games of IPL 6.

Match No. 55, Kings XI Punjab vs Rajasthan Royals, PCA Stadium, Mohali

The magnificent win at home against Bangalore in the last match must have boosted the confidence of Kings XI. Miller’s performance was outstanding and almost makes everyone believe that Punjab can beat any team now. However, the easy catch of Miller that Kohli dropped contributed more to the KXIP win than Miller himself. On a flat deck, Rajasthan Royals’ bowling attack looks better which forces me to go with the Dravid led team

Match No. 57, Delhi Daredevils vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi

The Feroz Shah Kotla ground has produces mixed results for the Delhi Daredevils in IPL 6. In the match vs CSK they were all out for 83 whereas in another the chased down Mumbai’s 162 run target with three overs to spare. In some other matches, the team had to face defeat despite good performance. They have struggled against good bowling teams on the Kotla pitch and RCB, who recently failed to defend 190, is not known for their bowling attack. This may sound crazy, but I think Delhi has better chances of winning against RCB in this match.

Sunrisers have a team that depends too much on their bowling attack as their batting line up is weaker than most of the IPL teams. Kings XI, on the other hand, have a balanced team. The Mohali pitch has aided the batsmen in this tournament. So a team with stronger batting line up has the advantage and that is Kings XI Punjab.

Every match is crucial for the Hyderabad from now on for securing a place in the top 4. With a negative net run rate, Sunrisers’ play off chances are bleak unless they win a couple of matches with a huge margin. But they can not certainly expect to win big against the Mumbai at Wankhede. Top 6 Bowlers of IPL 6 so far

T20 tests the skills and adaptability of the bowlers. It is a format arguably tilted towards the batsmen. Making the scenario worse is the flat decks, lightning quick out fields and short boundaries in India. This is where astuteness and the character of a bowler are tested. His variations and ability to restrain the scoring rate along with striking at important times comes into picture. IPL 6 has been unique from the other IPLs in the sense that teams chasing low totals have struggled, such matches have gone to the wire, which testifies the fact that bowlers are picking up the skills from experience to counter strike the boundary seekers. For spinners, it is the variations that help them curtail the run flow and pick up wickets at regular interval. Pace and length variation along with good slower ones is the recipe for quicker bowlers. Below are the bowlers who have impressed the most in IPL 6 so far:

Amit Mishra: This leggie from the bowling powerhouse Hyderabad Sunrisers is the most successful bowler in IPL history and this IPL is no different. Scalping his 3rd hat-trick in his IPL career in a game against PWI, Amit Mishra turned the match on his own. His googlies have troubled the best left handers in the business, the likes of Hussey and Raina. Along with wrong ones, he has a good flipper and an accurate straighter one. He has bagged 17 wickets from 11 matches at a healthy economy rate at 6.17. He also held the purple cap for a short period of time only to be taken away by other bowlers. Agreed that he has the support of bowlers like Dale Steyn and the Hyderabad home pitch, his consistent performance (his average is only 14.88) puts him ahead of other bowlers. He is still at no. 3 among the top wicket takers in IPL 6. Being the spinner with most number of wickets in the tournament so far, we rank him the best bowler of IPL 6 so far.

Sunil Narine: This esoteric spinner has done it at all levels and for all franchises. Sunil Narine has an impeccable economy rate of 5.68. His mystery cob has scalped 16 wickets making him 4th highest wicket taker of IPL 6 so far. He hit the jackpot in the 2012 IPL auction, attracting a bid of $700,000 from KKR and he is worth each of that penny. He chipped away with 4 wickets in the 1st match of the tournament against DD. Gambhir and the KKR management have shown immense confidence in him and used him intelligently during the matches to check the run flow and breaking partnerships.  With his amazing striking ability and a fantastic economy rate we can safely put the phrase “T20 is not for spinners” to rest. In last few matches, he has not bowled well which the reason why he narrowly missed the first spot on our Top 6 Bowlers list.

James Faulkner: With 17 wickets in 9 matches at a commanding economy rate of 6.17 runs per over which includes a demolishing spell against Hyderabad the other day in which his figures, currently the best, were 5/20, Faulkner is the find of this IPL. He was highly rated in Australia after he won his third consecutive Ricky Ponting Medal as Tasmania’s best player and consequently was roped in by RR in this season. Apart from moving the ball in both ways, he has a good slower one which is difficult to decipher. He can also be handy with the bat at lower down the order. His good performance in IPL has already been reaped after his call by national squad for the Ashes.

Vinay Kumar: Bagging an impressive 19 wickets from 12 outings, Vinay Kumar is the most successful Indian pacer in this year’s IPL. Considering the fact that his home ground is the flattest deck in India, he has a commendable economy rate at 8.11. He has developed a good wide Yorker and an effective leg cutter which have turned him into a good death bowler. At the start of the innings, he primarily depends on out swingers and bowls at a decent pace. He has held the purple cap and is well in the race to own it, come the end of the season.  He could not have asked for a better mentor than Venakatesh Prasad in RCB camp. A good finish to this year’s IPL and he could be in reckoning for a place in national squad. He is at no. 4 on our list.

Dwayne Bravo: This versatile cricketer from Trinidad stands at number one in wickets column. This has not been the best of IPLs for Bravo with the bat, but he has made it up for it with the white cherry. With 20 wickets from 12 matches, he has played a pivotal role in taking CSK to the top of the table. Slow bouncer, accurate Yorkers and good speed variations make him a brilliant death bowler. Trending on internet is just not his bowling skills but also his ever sharp and flowing dance moves. Even though he has more wickets that all other bowlers and currently the purple cap holder, he is at no. 5 in our list because of his high strike rate (8.02) and average (17.05).

R P Singh: People will remember him for his horrendous last ball no ball against CSK which costed them the match, but a deep insight would prove that his performances have been more than reasonable in this year’s IPL. The 2009 purple cap winner has 13 wickets in his kitty from the 10 matches at a considerable economy of 8.1. He made a culpable impact at the start of the IPL, picking 3 wicket haul 3 times in the 1st 6 innings. RCB boasts of an explosive batting line up, one of the reason because of which the good work done by the bowlers often go unnoticed. He along with V.Kumar have played their part in taking RCB to number two spot and would give CSK a run for their money for that coveted top spot. Once a premier opening bowler with the lethal incoming delivery to the right handers, he has to sustain his good work with the ball if he has any dreams to make the cut into the national squad.

IPL 6: Both Mumbai Crowd and Kohli overreacted

They had booed when Sachin was dismissed after crawling his way to a tardy 1 after batting for 34 long minutes. They didn’t spare Yuvraj when he did a Jonty to deny the MI a last ball victory. And now, it was Kohli’s turn.

The Mumbai crowd, a traditionally miffy one, apparently took offence when a Kohli direct hit had Rayudu scrambling for space to make it back in time to the bowler’s end. Pollard had hit the Vinay Kumar delivery to the cover region, and Kohli effected a direct hit. There was an ugly tangle involving Rayudu, and Kumar who was backing up the throw, and a grappling Rayudu failed to get his bat back in time. The collision was without a hint of doubt unintentional, as Vinay Kumar had his back towards Rayudu. Rayudu was, incidentally, yet to face a delivery.

Kohli went ahead with the appeal, and the television umpire had no hesitation in ruling Rayudu out. And this did not go down very well with the Mumbai crowd.

The dismissal was, as such, a fairly legitimate one. Kumar was in no position to be aware of the fact that he was obstructing Rayudu. But the fans were in no mood to relent, and started firing a barrage of jeers towards a cornered Kohli, and possibly even called him “cheater”.

The hapless star, a no-nonsense player who is all for giving-it-back-to-them, found himself in unfamiliar territory when he realised that he was not in a position to retort here, or fling out the middle finger.

Chants of ‘cheater, cheater’ reverberated throughout the stadium when he was out in the middle, and the crowd tried to get on his nerves throughout the match. And the jeering was at its loudest when Harsha Bhogle called him up for the post match presentation. Having put restraining orders on himself throughout the match, he now let his heart out.

Here is what he had to say:

“I don’t know what is wrong with people in this venue. It feels a bit weird because at the end of the day you play for India and you don’t come here to be hated.”

“It has happened to a few players in the past as well. I don’t know why they get so worked up during IPL. IPL is not the end of the world. They forget that the players they are booing for also play for their country.”

“It is only creating hatred among the players. When I come back and play for India, they are going to cheer for me. It doesn’t work that way.”

The Indian fans go more by emotions than by reason. Passion runs high in any match involving India, or any Indian cricketer for that matter. And if the fans blurt out their sentiments, one should, maybe, take it in his stride. And after all, if there is a concept of home teams and away teams in the IPL, fans are going to make life difficult for the visiting side. As is the case with international matches, the entailing hostility of an ‘away’ crowd is an associated sidebar.

Maybe it is because I am a staunch Kohli fan, but the booing on the part of the Mumbai crowd was a tad over the line. True, Kohli himself has anger management issues, and is all for settling scores rather than laugh things off. The incident in Sydney also made evident the fact that he is not bogged down by such crowd behaviour.

On the other hand, Kohli also didn’t handle the situation perfectly. By responding to an attention seeking crowd, Kohli ensured that he will be targeted again by the Wankhede crowd when he comes to play there next time. And the “I play for India” argument doesn’t go down well considering Kohli’s spat with his India team mate Gautam Gambhir the other day.

But he is only 24 and a long career ahead of him. Aggressive that he is, he is bound to feel miffed when he is booed in his own country. In fact, that is what anyone would have felt, though whether or not they would have talked about it is a different matter.

As far as the crowd goes, the craze for IPL is by no means comparable to the loyalty for the national side. IPL is, one would say, still a fledgling league and crowd loyalties are not so well-formed that warrants such booing of a national superstar. It was, in all probability, an attempt to get under Kohli’s skin that took an ugly turn. And one should remember, this was the crowd that once booed Sachin.

And the crowd made their ignorance of the rules of the game clear if they chanted ‘cheater’ even with an iota of conviction. The run-out, as pointed earlier, was a perfectly legitimate one and blame lies on Rayudu to have not looked where he was headed, for Vinay Kumar was in no position to know that he stood in the way.

What happened that night was unfortunate. It was an ignorant and only partly emotional reaction of a crowd that was whimsical to say the least, choosing to act on the spur of the moment. Kohli was correct in pointing out whatever he felt, for he has made it pretty evident that he lives and dies by playing for his nation. And if he gets back such response from his own countrymen, then he is bound to explode.

Match No. 43, Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Mumbai Indians, Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad

While CSK has consolidated its position at the top, other teams like Mumbai and Hyderabad are fighting hard to ensure a place in the top 4. This will be the first time both teams will face each other. Hyderabad has won all three of their home matches in the tournament so far. The Hyderabad pitch has produced low scoring games. Both teams have potent bowling attack, so the pitch will suit both the teams. Hence, team with a better batting line up will be in advantage. That tilts the favor towards the Mumbai Indians.

Match No. 47, Kolkata Knight Riders vs Rajasthan Royals, Eden Gardens, Kolkata

The loss to the Delhi Daredevils must have shattered the confidence of the Kolkata who happens to be the IPL defending champion. The semi final chances of Team Kolkata are almost over as they need 5-6 wins in rest of the 6 matches. On the other hand, Rajasthan are in the reckoning for a spot among the top 4. Despite having no big names, the Jaipur based team has kept performing consistently as a result of which they are now at no. 3 on the points table. The Kolkata pitch is expected to behave like the Jaipur one, so Rajasthan will feel at home. Last time, both the teams met at Jaipur in IPL 6, Kolkata had failed to chase Rajasthan’s target of 145 and was all out for 125. Considering all the factors, I would go with Rajasthan.

Match No. 48, Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Delhi Daredevils, Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad

With 3 wrong predictions in 5 matches, I am under too much pressure to produce some correct predictions as you can find out from the comments section. I would like to tell our regular readers that while I make predictions, I consider every factor (as many as 8 factors for each game) as per the extent to which they can affect the outcome of a match. But ultimately, performance on that day decides the winner. So, please understand that the predictions pick not the winner but the likely winner.

Coming to the match we have in our hand, Hyderabad’s chances look strong. For the match is in Hyderabad where the records of the home team is 4 wins in 4 matches. Match No. 49, Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

This match is perhaps the toughest match to predict. Though the match will be played at Mumbai’s home ground where MI holds 100% win record (4 win in 4 matches) in IPL 6, on team and individual performance basis CSK is way ahead of the home team. Another statistical view point about CSK is that the team has won all its 5 away matches in this season of IPL. In the last encounter between both teams, Mumbai had defeated CSK by 9 runs in a close match at the Chepauk, Chennai. In a clash of titans, I am slightly inclined towards Mumbai Indians.

Match No. 51, Kings XI Punjab vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, PCA Stadium, Mohali

RCB is a team known for its record of losing the most no. of away matches in IPL 6. The away jinx of the team was broken in the last match vs Pune. Kings XI has 2 wins in 3 matches at Mohali but the two wins were close ones and came against comparatively weaker teams (PWI & KKR). But KXIP’s only loss was a huge one (by 10 wickets) and came against a strong team like CSK. Considering all the factors, I believe RCB has strong chances for tomorrow.

My predictions are, sometimes, accused of being made in favor of strong teams. You can find one or two comment on that at the bottom of this post as well. But frankly, recent form (both team and individual) are the most definitive factor that can be relied upon to make a prediction regarding the outcome of the match. Now, considering the recent form, Rajasthan has the edge especially because the match is being played in Jaipur

Review: CSK’s official gaming app ‘Battle of Chepauk’

The Chennai based Nextwave Multimedia Pvt. Ltd. has launched the official gaming app “Battle of Chepauk” for the Chennai Super Kings. The app, which was launched by CSK captain MS Dhoni and coach Stephen Flemming, features CSK players and plays the ‘Whistle Podu’ song in the background. The game is now available on iOS and Android and will soon be launched for Windows Phone, Nokia Store, Facebook and Chrome app store. The company and the Chennai based franchise are hopeful to cash in the craze for IPL and CSK which is also one of the most popular IPL teams.

The app is free to download but for full the full version you have to purchase the game by paying Rs 170. As per latest blog post by the company, the app is among Top 6 free downloadable apps in Apple App Store.

I downloaded the app on my iPad and here’s the review of the app based on my experience.

Play with CSK players in your team

Play with CSK players in your team

The game ‘Battle of Chepauk’ has 3 modes: Super Over (free), Super Slog and Super Chase (in-app purchase). You can select CSK players in your team and play the match. In the Super Over mode, you have 18 challenges which you need to complete. The graphics of the game is good. The app runs smoothly. Playing the game is easy as it is like other regular cricket gaming app where you swipe to play shot. However, you can’t bowl in the game in any of the modes. This is something I didn’t like, from cricketing point of view of course.

In Super Chase mode, you will have to chase down a score in 5 overs. In Super slog mode, you can bat for 20 overs with your team and try to score as many runs as possible.

Positives:

*Graphics

*Very few glitches

*No lagging experienced

*Customization for CSK fans (team, stadium, anthem)

Negatives

*The CSK anthem plays continuously throughout the game which may be annoying

*No replays

*Commentary would have been a great addition

*No option to bowl

*If you are using the free app (Super Over mode), you will have to select 11 players for just one over which is pointless

*No option to select opposition

I noticed a few glitches which needs to be corrected in further updates.

1. Sometimes, you get caught at the boundary line at the same time it also shows the distance of the six hit.

2. Wide balls being considered as valid balls

Overall, the ‘Battle of Chepauk’ turns out to be a good game. But if you are a CSK fan, this is especially for you.

The app is available on iTunes Store, Google Play Store and Amazon Store.

Match No. 33, Kolkata Knight Riders vs Mumbai Indians, Eden Gardens, Kolkata

It is a tough job to choose between both the teams: KKR & MI. Both teams look almost equal on paper. Both teams have under-performed in IPL so far. Mumbai’s batting is slightly stronger which may give them an edge on Kolkata’s sluggish pitch. Mumbai Indians will win the match as a gift for the Master Blaster who would be celebrating his 40th birthday on that day.

Match No. 34, Chennai Super Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai

Team Hyderabad is heavily dependent on their bowling to win matches. The batting is very weak which gets balanced by their bowling attack. That is why despite winning 5 of their 7 matches, their net run rate is in negative. Against strong teams like CSK, such lopsided strategy may not work, especially on a batting friendly wicket of Chepauk. I will go with Chennai for this match.

Match No. 37, Mumbai Indians vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

After Gayle’s innings of 175*, any team would hesitate to play against Bangalore. But Gayle has not scored well in away matches (5 runs in 2 matches in IPL 6). Gayle’s heroics have been limited to Bangalore so far. Assuming Gayle’s poor run in away matches to continue, Kohli and DeVilliers would be the real threat for the Team Mumbai. From the 2 matches played at Wankhede this season, the pitch is aiding the batsmen. Both teams have in-form explosive batsmen, so bowling attack will be the deciding factor. Going by this logic, expect Mumbai to beat Bangalore in a nail biting finish.

Match No. 39, Delhi Daredevils vs Pune Warriors, International Cricket Stadium, Raipur

This match will be the first match of the IPL 6 which will be hosted at the International Cricket Stadium, Raipur. The ground will serve as Delhi’s home ground. The behaviour of the pitch is unknown. So not much importance can be given on that factor for the prediction. The two teams, Delhi and Pune, are the last two teams on the points table. Delhi, recently, got all out for IPL’s lowest score while Pune bowlers were brutally abused by Gayle’s bat who scored a 66 ball 175*. So performance wise, there’s nothing to choose from. However, a few players from the Pune side seem to be in form. So, I am slightly inclined towards Pune.

Match No. 40, Rajasthan Royals vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur

This will be a pretty exciting affair when both team lock horns in the match no. 40 of IPL 6. Rajasthan Royals hold the reputation of being one of the ‘strongest at home’ side while RCB have not won a single away game this season. Faulkner’s performance gives RR the must needed boost as their bowling department looks stronger now. So I will go with the Rajasthan for this match even though there’s always a risk involved to predict against a strong side like the RCB. IPL 6: 9 new records set up by Gayle in one match

There are times in life where you just sit back and say “how on earth that could have happened”? One such moment was today. Chirstopher Gayle pulverized PWI with his blazing knock of 175 runs from just 65 balls. Hundred came in 30 balls: fastest ever in the history of T20 cricket. The knock resulted in a dominant victory for the RCB which takes them to the top of the IPL 6 point table, for the time being atleast. 33 min rain delay didn’t avert the bigger storm: the Gayle storm that was lined up for PWI. One feature which was different in this knock from other knocks in this IPL was there was no holding back for Gayle in the initial overs. Signs were ominous when Gayle took toll of the highest wicket taker of this season’s Ranji, Ishwar Pandey, who got demolished for 21 runs in his first over. He stormed past 50 in just 17 balls- a new record. Infliction continued as he demolished bowlers by hitting sixes which hit roofs, went out of the stadium and even the miss hits were carrying over the ropes. The fastest century in the history of T20 cricket, a staggering 30 ball 100, a landmark he celebrated with a punch of the gloves then kneeling down and raising his arms. PWI players could do nothing but to applaud and this was evident from Yuvi’s friendly gesture at the end of the innings. The momentum was superbly continued by AB De Villiers who blazed away with a quick fire 31 runs from 8 balls. There was no respite for the bowlers as they were bamboozled by the belligerence of the Big man and failed to stem the run flow in last six overs in which they conceded 85runs. The total stacked up at 263/5: highest ever in T20 cricket.

There was only one way where the match was heading to and it was manifested after first six overs in which PWI lost 4 wickets. After that it was just a matter time. They managed a meager 133 which resulted in a massive win for RCB which boosts their net run-rate and takes them to the top of the points table. The margin of victory (130 runs) is second largest victory in IPL. The icing on the cake was the Gangnam dance by Gayle which did after castling Ishwar Panday, a day this man would like to forget. On the hindsight, captain Finch may regret his decision to bowl first on a flat deck. Well, no complaints from cricket fans, who witnessed one of the most destructive innings ever played.

On his way to the memorable knock, in which he was even compared with Sir Viv, Gayle broke many records in T-20 cricket which have been listed below. This demigod will be remembered for his colorful character and gregarious nature:

1. Fastest individual 50 in IPL (17 balls)

2. Fastest individual 100 in T20 (30 balls)

3. Longest six hit in IPL 6 (a mammoth 119m)

4. 1st player to hit 150 sixes in IPL

5. Most sixes hit by a batsman in an innings in T20 cricket (17)

6. Involved in best opening partnership for RCB in IPL (167- Gayle’s contribution in the partnership: 127)

7. Highest individual score in IPL 175* (66 balls)

New Team Records that were made thanks to the Gayle Innings:

1. Highest Total in T20 cricket (263-5)

2. Fastest Team Hundred in IPL (47 balls)

Top 6 Stadiums of IPL 6

IPL fever is accentuated when the stadiums are full, noisy and frenzy. From 8 in 2008 to 12 in 2013, the IPL phenomenon has touched as much cricket stadiums as it can. 2010 saw induction of Barabati stadium in Cuttack, Sardar Patel stadium in Ahmadabad and a beautiful Dharmashala stadium as new venues for matches. New franchise Pune Warriors has Subroto Roy stadium which is equipped with world class facilities. This year, two stadiums in Ranchi and Raipur were included to the official venue list. So which is the best of the lot? Which can hold maximum spectators? Here is the compilation 6 best stadiums in IPL6:

1. Eden gardens: One of the iconic cricket stadiums of India, Eden Gardens is the home ground of KKR. It is famously said that “a cricketer’s cricketing education is not complete till he has played in front of a packed Eden Gardens.” Established in 1864, the oldest of the lot, it can hold upto a staggering one lakh people. Every cricketer has dream to perform in front of an emotional crowd of Eden Gardens. Talking about emotions, crowd supported their favorite Sourav Ganguly over the home team KKR last year when both the team locked horns at the iconic stadium. Seldom it happens that home team doesn’t get support when they play at home ground in IPL.

Eden will host the final of IPL-6. Generally a bat-first wicket, it becomes sluggish and slow as the game goes on. Spinners will play a pivotal role and no wonder why Naraine is doing well.

Capacity: 90,000
Par Score: 150-160

2. Chinaswamy Stadium: Home ground of RCB; Chinaswamy Stadium boasts of one of the most boisterous crowds in India. It is typically a batting paradise with ball doing no lateral movement after two-three overs. RCB chased a target of over 200 two times consecutively last year is a deposition of this fact and Gayle has been able to make optimum use of this batting friendly track. A dreaded moment came when two bombs exploded outside the stadium and third one was diffused before an IPL match in 2010 which saw two matches being shifted from Bangalore to Mumbai. But the crowd didn’t stop coming to the stadium to support there home team. “R C B” “R C B” is what the fully packed stadium erupts every time Bangalore plays at home.

Capacity: 40,000.
Par score: 180

3. Wankhade Stadium: Home of Mumbai Indians; this stadium was recently renovated in the build up to host the 2011 Cricket World Cup Final. Probably, the most ‘complete’ pitch presently in India. Along with pace and bounce, which stroke makers will enjoy, it assists the spinners as well. There is enough green cover on the pitch to move the ball sideways. Lush green outfield means once you pierce the infield and place it in gaps, there is a boundary for taking. The stadium also boasts of a crowd which gives standing ovation every time Son of the soil Sachin Tendulkar comes to bat.

The stadium was debarred from hosting 2008 IPL final due to variety of reasons. In fact, DY Patil has hosted both the finals played in Mumbai. Banning SRK from entering into the stadium is one of those bold decisions taken by Wankhade officials which didn’t go down well with some people. If one has to go by last year’s IPL record at this venue, batting 1st is the best option as out 8 matches played, team batting 1st has won 7 times.

Capacity: 45,000
Par score: 170-175

4. M. A. Chidambaram Stadium: It is the home ground of whistle podu fans. It is not one of those belter of a pitch but good enough to put a decent total and fight for it because as the game progresses it becomes slow and low. It always has had a knowledgeable and appreciative crowd. It hosted 2012 IPL final which saw KKR taking away the IPL crown from the home team. This stadium probably saw one of its doleful moments when Sri Lankan players were denied permission to play in Chennai in this year’s IPL. The home ground of the most successful IPL team was renovated and much needed spaces were created in between the stands so that cool breeze can flow, which has always been the need of the hour in a place like Chennai.

Capacity: 50,000
Par Score: 160-175

5. Punjab Cricket Association Stadium: Home of Kings XI Punjab, it is regarded as the best pitches for seam bowling in India. It has pace and green turf on the pitch makes it very much bowler friendly. One peculiar thing about this stadium which sets it apart is that the light pillars are very low in height. This is to avoid aircraft from the nearby airport colliding with the light pillars. The stadium saw one of the worst controversies of IPL unfolding: The Slap gate incident which has taken new twists and turns after Sree’s spree of tweets.

Capacity: 30,000
Par Score: 150-170

6. HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala: One will run out of the adjectives to describe this picturesque stadium in Dharamshala. Pristine blue sky, towering mountains and serene atmosphere: one could not ask for a better place to play cricket. Its tryst with IPL began in 2010 in which it was home stadium for KXI, Punjab. Cricket matches were played in the presence of his holiness, Dalai Lama. It hosted two matches including one which was a thriller against CSK. A good track for stroke players, it also gives the assistance to the fast bowlers because of the passing breeze. The success of IPL matches was rewarded to the officials when it was chosen to host an ODI match in 2013. It definitely has the potential to become one of the best stadiums in the world.

Capacity: 25,000
Par Score: 170-180

Match No. 22, Pune Warriors India vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium, Pune

Last week, 3 of my predictions were wrong and 2 out of them involved Pune Warriors. In week 2, Pune won 2 crucial matches against Rajasthan and Chennai. One may think that Pune have found the right combination to win matches that give them an edge against the resurgent Hyderabad. However, an important point to note is that in both the matches Pune depended heavily on Aaron Finch. Not sure Finch will be successful against Dale Steyn. Apart from that, Sunrisers have performed consistently while PWI’s performance moves from one extreme to another. Considering all the factors, we will go in favor of SH.

But Mumbai’s players (Kartik, Rohit, Johnson, Ojha) have displayed consistent form. Sachin also seems to have regaining his form. Match No. 27, Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Rajasthan Royals, M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore

Rajasthan Royals, who have 4 wins in 5 matches, have beaten some of the top teams in the IPL 6 so far. In their last match, Royals bowled the whole Mumbai out at a score of 92. But it is their batting that looks slightly weak. Even though they scored 179 in the last match, that too on a slow Jaipur pitch, the batting line up doesn’t look explosive. Except Watson, no other batsman in the side can score at a fast rate. On a flat track like Bangalore, having explosive batsmen in the side is the key. Match No. 29, Kings XI Punjab vs Pune Warriors, PCA Stadium, Mohali

Though Team Pune looks stronger when judged purely on the basis of name records, Punjab are ahead if current form is considered. Despite having no big name in their side, the Mohali based team has been able to scrap through. In a battle of equals, KXI hold the edge over Pune Warriors

Match No. 30, Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals, MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai

Both teams have 4 wins in 6 matches and almost same net run rate in the tournament so far. However, CSK looks stronger at home. Rajasthan’s heavy loss against RCB a few days ago has exposed certain shortcomings in the team strategy. A shrewd captain that MS Dhoni is, would definitely exploit such shortcomings in the opposition.

Prediction: CSK wins

Match No. 31, Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Pune Warriors, M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore

Even after scoring a 180+ score batting first, Pune Warriors lost vs Kings XI Punjab in the last match. Though the batsmen of the team seem to have regained their forms, the bowlers look in terrible form. On a flat pitch against the likes of Gayle, Kohli and De Villiers, Pune’s misery may get prolonged.

Prediction: RCB wins

Match No. 32, Delhi Daredevils vs Kings XI Punjab, Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi

After the super performance by the Jay(awardene)-Viru combo which helped DD to win their first game in IPL6 that too against the mihty Mumbai, there’s not much left to predict. If Viru continues the form DD shouldn’t find it difficult to beat KXIP.

Prediction: DD wins

The Pondulkar story : greatness, or a great burden?

They are a statistician’s delight: more than 1200 international matches coupled with more than 61000 international runs. These are staggering numbers. Watching the two of them walk out to open the batting for the same side is like watching Jai and Veeru from the epic Sholay getting ready to take an entire opposition down all by themselves. Really, there can seldom be a sight in a cricket field that is more fascinating than watching those pros in tandem. The alliance between Ponting and Tendulkar is popularly called as ‘Pondulkar‘  and has been the talk of the town ever since Ponting was picked up by the Mumbai Indians earlier this year.

Spare a thought for the opposition bowler, who is faced with the prospect of bowling to those two. It can hardly be a rosy sight for him to see Pondulkar doing what they do best, decimating the opposition attack, grabbing it by the scruff of its neck. The bowlers might as well be having chills running down their spine.

Mumbai Indians have traditionally been probably the most popular and the most talked-and-tweeted about team in the IPL. Probably it has partly to do with Tendulkar. And with Ponting being added to their arsenal, fans could not have asked for more.

But in spite of all the anticipation, and the huge expectations that the gung-ho fans have placed on the pair, the legendary batsmen have come a cropper thus far in the IPL. They have hardly lived up to the hype, and have batted in a way that is completely antithetical to their past play.

A below average IPL thus far as regards their partnership stats, the figures being 52, 3, 0 and 54. And the fifty partnership went down the drain in the first game as they failed to see their side home. Ponting scored 28, his highest till now in IPL 6. One would say two fifty opening stands in 4 T20 matches is fine enough, but with the amount of class and greatness that this pair has, this is not a point worth bragging. Surely, this pair can and will have to deliver better goods.

Pondulkar in numbers: Fail to impress

Pondulkar in numbers: Fails to impress

Even though Tendulkar has managed to get starts, one would say luck hasn’t really favoured him. He has shown glimpses of his greatness in bits and pieces, making evident that the sublime cover-drive and the flick over short mid-wicket still has the same flair as earlier. True, he has had a few touch-and-go decisions going against him (against CSK), or that he was run out rather unluckily in the fixture against DD, and in MI’s opener against RCB. Nevertheless, his team would be hoping that he manages to convert such solid starts into something substantial. His quickfire 44 against Pune must have provided the fans a much needed relief.

Ponting, however, has presented a sorry figure thus far. He has barely scored anything of substance in the first four games, save the 28 he scored against RCB. In the fourth one too, he looked out of sorts, and was scraping through while Tendulkar was blazing on all guns at the other end. Dancing down the track to pacers, especially when the runs are not coming easy in the powerplays, has had a major hand in his peril. Rather than slog it out and get settled before unleashing himself, he has looked to launch counter-attacks that haven’t paid any dividends. Accepted that he was the greatest puller of the cricket ball in his heyday, and was a very aggressive-at-the-same-time-stoical batsman, but things haven’t really worked out for him in IPL 6. He has been fidgety at the start, and looked completely out of sorts. His uncharacteristic dismissals present a sorry picture, be it the miscued pull against CSK, or the needless drive against DD, the ball being gleefully accepted at mid-off. His unenviable strike rate of 72.72 shows how clueless Ponting has been in the IPL 6 so far.

Ponting was literally having a bash in the Big Bash T20 league, where he was having a ball playing for the Hobart Hurricanes. Having failed to replicate his performances here in IPL, he would be itching to have a big one soon. And that is something that the opponents have to be wary of. Such batsmen are more dangerous just when they are being written off. Criticising such time-tested legends is foolhardy, and they are themselves their biggest critics. One good game and the old timing gets ingrained in their willows, much to the dismay of their opponents. Having Pondulkar in one’s side, whether performing well or not, is an asset in itself.

One cannot ignore the fact that both the stars are probably beyond their prime, and ageing stars are generally seen as a burden on any T20 side. But, having said that, one needs to take into consideration the fact that Ponting and Sachin are not ‘ordinary legends’. As long as they are available, they are indispensable, whatever the format. Age? Slow reflexes? Consider Ponting’s catch to dismiss Unmukt Chand: can you beat that?

Their childlike enthusiasm when it comes to cricket is a rarity. The youngsters in the MI squad can’t have enough of the motivation that having Pondulkar in their side provides them with. One of the greatest (and explicitly the most successful) captain ever, the MI too have appointed Ponting as their skipper, and as far as captaincy goes, he has been spot on thus far, except for the opener where his decision of holding back Pollard till it was too late was a debatable one. (READ: Why IPL6 has more foreign captains than Indians)

It is no surprise that one good partnership (or one good innings for Ponting, since he looks frail) is all it will take for Pondulkar to get back into the groove. The MI have pocketed a big fish in Ponting, and they have to stick with him. Sooner or later, Dinesh Karthik would be exempted from bailing them out, and fans will have more of what they were subliminally promised: a Pondulkar rhapsody at par with the blitzkriegs that these two have doled out time and again while donning national colours.
